Preliminary research published in theJournal of Gastro-Respiratory and Hepatologyin June 2019 showed that taking omeprazole and esomeprazole can reduce symptoms of GERD. However, the results of the study were inconclusive. A total of 56 patients with GERD were given omeprazole and esomeprazole combined for a year. They were randomized to one of two treatment groups: taking omeprazole (N = 27) or taking esomeprazole (N = 30) as a single drug.Esomeprazole was used as single drug therapy to treat GERD in patients with mild symptoms of GERD. The patients were randomized to either omeprazole or esomeprazole. Patients taking omeprazole had significantly fewer heartburn than those taking esomeprazole. The trial found that omeprazole reduced symptoms of GERD by 26.6% and esomeprazole by 25.9% in the groups who took omeprazole and esomeprazole, respectively. However, the trial did not find significant differences between the groups on any of the esomeprazole measures, including acid reflux.
A similar trial in 2021 found that taking Zantac reduced symptoms of GERD by 22.6% and esomeprazole by 17.5%. In this trial, patients taking Zantac had significantly fewer heartburn and other symptoms of GERD, including heartburn and GERD-related symptoms, than patients in the omeprazole group. The results of the trial also showed that Zantac reduced symptoms of GERD by 30.1% and esomeprazole by 30.1%.
